Fly Fishing in Southern Alberta

About Old Man Rivers

At Old Man Rivers, we are focused on quality way more than quantity. Our goal is to introduce you to the wonders of this region, and present the fishing in its purest form. The technical aspects of fishing are understood by our guides and using heavy, gross, easy, or bland methods are avoided. Fishing is more than just catching fish – instead understanding drift qualities, hydraulics, and hatch activity is more crucial.

The focus on learning is what sets us apart from the rest; what would be best described as the “Zen of Fly Fishing”. Life brings lots of stress, from traffic, family, work, and the many other variables it can throw at us. Our goal is to be a medium in which you can get the deeper, inner understanding of the flow of fishing and in some cases life. There are certain types of people who can not slow down and take things in. Such people, I find, do not desire to learn and understand, instead they need to just catch fish, lots of them. For such people, my recommendation is to seek out another guide service in the area.

Some of the rivers in the far south of Alberta are much like New Zealand fishing, according to some well traveled individuals. The wind can be fierce and the walks between the fish long, but the rewards are well worth it. To help you enjoy your trip to the fullest extent, please look at the rivers (on this site) to aid you in making the best selection.

For people with walking difficulties, I would recommend the Bow River out of Calgary or the Oldman below the dam. With this in mind it should be possible to put together a trip that will create spectacular memories to reflect upon for the rest of your life.

Thanks for taking the time to visit us!
Andre
